Pretzel Thins

What are some good snacks to eat after school?

What kind of snacks are nutritious, low in fat, and provide energy? I swim every day for 2 hrs but I could stand to be healthier. I used to always eat Wheat Thins because I didn't think they were really junk food. It's really hard to find good snacks that aren't considered junk! What about honey wheat pretzels dipped in peanut butter?

Fat is actually NOT the big poison here. Unused carbohydrates are in fact converted to fat and stored. Someone might eat a lot of crackers or cookies thinking there is no real fat in them, but everyone knows you get fat. The point here is to eat in moderation, and set a calorie limit based on your activity. Since you swim 2 h a day, you should really be burning many calories if they are all laps and not just water treading. The best thing you can possibly eat is the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in the afternoon in UNPROCESSED fruit. You could also eat a salad and flavor it as they do in the Meditteranean: a small amount of olive oil and squeezing a lemon on top. Also many people think they are hungry when they are in fact dehydrated: drink at least 1-1.5 liters of plain, clean water and consume only small amounts of coffee and/or tea (yes, even iced tea...not too much). If your work requires you to sit for hours on end, then get up and talk a "breather' (short walk...it helps clear the mind). This is the healthy lifestyle.
