If the ratio of HCO3-:H2CO3 in blood at pH 7.4 is 10.17:1, then what is the pKa for the loss of
the first proton from H2CO3?
2. Type I collagen is a triple coiled-coil protein, in which each collagen monomer consists of an
amplified trimer repeat (Gly-X-Y)n. Why is the presence and sequence of glycine in the collagen
monomer of crucial importance to the structure of collagen?
3. Without enzymes, cells could not exist. What three properties do enzymes have that make life
possible?
4. Explain why very tight binding of a substrate to an enzyme is not desirable whereas tight binding
of the transition state is desirable.
Here is my strat:
1. pka= pH - log (salt/acid)
7.4=7.4 - log (10.17/1)= 7.3
2. gly fits in many places wher no AA can be the interal acid of a collagen Helix.
3. a) accelerate rxn b) select specific biochemical pathways
c) allow regulation of those pathways
4. tight binding of the transition state require less energy and lower rxn time
Here you go-
Henderson-Hasselbalch is the right way to go. However, you got the value wrong for some reason (I don't know why, maybe a typing error):
pKa = pH - log(10.17) = 6.39 (Which is what my esteemed friend already gave)
For the second question, I believe you are correct. I can only quote Wikipedia:
"Because glycine is the smallest amino acid, it plays a unique role in fibrous structural proteins. In collagen, Gly is required at every third position because the assembly of the triple helix puts this residue at the interior (axis) of the helix, where there is no space for a larger side group than glycine’s single hydrogen atom. For the same reason, the rings of the Pro and Hyp must point outward. These two amino acids thermally stabilize the triple helix — Hyp even more so than Pro — and less of them is required in animals such as fish, whose body temperatures are low."

For the third question, I am quite sure you are correct. However, I would be sure to mention that most enzymes catalyze their reactions over 1000 times faster.
I would venture to say that your fourth answer is correct.
