how do you find the molecular formula, Given: glyceryl trilineolate (linoleic acid is C18:2)?
The molecular formula should be C57H98O6. could someone please explain to me!
Linoleic acid is: C18H32O2
glycerol = C3H5(OH)3
Linoleic acid is a monoprotic acid. Glycerol has 3X OH groups, so it will form a compound of 3 linoleic acid molecules reacting with 1 glycerol molecule with the exclusion of 3H2O
The molecule will look like this:
C18H31O2-----

C18H31O2....l
The molecular formula of this is:
C = 18*3 + 3 = 57
H = 31*3 + 5 = 98
O = 2*3 = 6
C57H98O6 which is what you want.
