How safe is the Master Cleanser Diet (aka Maple Syrup Lemonade Diet)?

My cousin started doing this diet last week, and she is considering doing it once a month until she loses all the weight she wants. Is this safe to do?

The thing with this cleanse is, it's not permanent. Your cousin will lose water weight, but she'll gain it all back if she's not careful with what she eats after she's done. I know Beyonce did it for her movie role in Dream Girls, but even she said she gained it all back once she was done. The cleanse is a good way to kick start a healthy program, but your cousin has to stay with the program if she really wants to see results and keep the weight off. It's not safe to do for an excessive amount of time. 3 days should be tops, but if she plans on doing it longer, I highly suggest she go see a doctor for supervision. Remember, your cousin needs to do a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. If she wants to keep the weight off for the rest of her life, she needs to do something that she can do for the rest of her life. Once she's done the cleanse, she needs to continue with eating lots of fresh fruit and veggies, and protein and some carbs. If she goes back to her old eating habits (say, lots of burgers and fries), then her effort will have gone down the drain.
