Burners Complete

How do you burn stuff using an external DVD burner?
After finishing burning, Nero Startsmart says "your burning is complete" (something similar) the external burner doesn't eject the DVD cd and it turns out to be blank. Also I think the laptop is sending the information to my internal burner which is a CD burner and i want to burn DVDs.
Just before you click on burn, you should have an option somewhere to pick which device you want to burn with.
