Retrieving data from old hard drive, is a text file - but the writing gone?

What I mean is that first I had a failed hard drive I plugged in via USB box. Can not find any files that I had ever recorded on this, the factory settings and music that the sample / pics. I did a scan data recovery on it and find all the documents I had created. I have saved on a hard drive to work. However, when I open them, Alli see a bunch of nonsense. Symbols, random letters, etc. What do I do now? The data is really gone? Also, it was stupid of me, I know, however, I was using Open Office to do the typing instead of Microsoft Word (I prefer the ease of the program). Open Office on my work computer, also, so I do not know why it would not let me open it. Is anyone familiar with recovery Open Office docs or should it be all the same?

Data recovery programs primarily sell hope, not of result. Recovering a deleted file can be affected by many things beyond the control of the program as successful recoveries, as compared reported "recovered files" are rare. Sorry, but these files are probably gone for good.
